totally agreed, it is very discouraging.
I saw a story in the news a while ago. A couple of people were selling their paintings that were basically splatter messes for thousands of dollars to some snob who loved the artworks. She probably thought each droplet of paint was a metaphor or something. But it turned out, all the paintings were created by a toddler just flicking wads of paint around...
I might not personally like all art I see, but I still understand the skill and patience it takes to make it. Saying something is "in" is just stupid. Most people like what they personally like, not what others tell them to like (Except for the stupid people that follow whatever is popular).
